The history of CATV

From the beginning of the 1970s CATV has made rapid strides in the Netherlands. In the 1990s, digital television made its appearance and turned out as a crucial addition to the original concept. The possibilities regarding the quality of sound and vision for the consumer substantially increased.

The principle of Community Access Television (CATV)

In general, a CATV network contains the following components:

  1. A headend, which is the central part of the network and determines which channels are being transmitted and at what frequency
  2. A fiber optic transmission network from the district centre to the headend
  3. A coaxial access network from the district centre to the customer
  4. Cabling in the house of the customer

The entire network is called a Hybrid Fiber Coaxial network (HFC).
